Many of us will have read E. Nesbit’s “The Railway Children” when we were young, and those of us who are old enough, will remember fondly the film of 1970 starring Jenny Agutter and Bernard Cribbins.

This well loved story of an affluent Edwardian family, forced into an impoverished lifestyle in Yorkshire, captures both the exhilarations and worries of childhood which are as relevant today as they were then. As well as writing over forty books for children. E Nesbit was a prolific writer on socialism during the 1880s and was, in many ways, ahead of her time. Her books are said to have inspired later writers such as CS Lewis and JK Rowling.

This new stage adaptation by Mike Kenny has been playing to rave reviews in both York and London where they have had the benefit of a real steam train! We can’t promise that, but our backstage crew has worked incredibly hard to produce a set that brings this story to life.

So, sit back, get ready to wave your flags and enjoy the show. And have you handkerchiefs ready for the final moments!
